Large Item Collection (i.e. items not acceptable with household trash collection) On April 27, 2010, the Township Board reinstituted a separate fee for resident requests to pickup large item(s) that are not acceptable for putting out with your household trash. Prior to 1992 the Township had also charged a separate fee for this pick up service.

From the 1992 and until recently the revenues generated from the garbage millage that is assessed on all property tax bills allowed the Township to include large item pickup without a separate fee being paid by the residents. However, because of declining revenues and dropping property values there are not enough funds to support this program as we had previously. Only residents who actually use the pickup service will pay the fee.

Acceptable large items are those that cannot be put out for pick up with regular household trash and would include furniture, mattresses, carpet, cabinets, TVs etc. Items that will not be accepted for large item pick up are auto parts and tires, building materials, contractor's debris, concrete, bricks, dirt, sod, oils, computers or any other type of hazardous waste. Residents may want to consider renting a roll off dumpster from a private company (check the Yellow Pages) to dispose of non-acceptable items. If you have a specific question about whether an item you have is acceptable for pick up by the Township you may call (313) 387-2641.

The fee schedule for large item pickup by the Township is

  • A minimum of $60 which allows up to two items
  • $15 for each additional item

When paying for this service you will be given a specific pick up date. Please note that you may not set any item at the road until 6:00 pm the night before your scheduled pick up or you will be in violation of Township ordinances and may receive a ticket from the Ordinance Department.

Pre-payments for large item pickup are to be made at the Department of Public Services Building, 12200 Beech Daly (between Plymouth & Schoolcraft, directly across from the U.S. Post Office) Monday thru Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. If you are unable to come in during these times, you may mail your request or place it in our drop box on the side of the building. Click here to download a printable form to complete and send in with your payment by check or money order. Do not place cash in our drop box or with any payment mailed in. Checks or money orders should be made payable to "Redford Township Central Maintenance Department" and mailed to 12200 Beech Daly, Redford MI 48239. A receipt will be mailed to you and will include the date on which your item(s) will be picked up. Note that pickup dates for large items will vary and may not be done on the same day that your household garbage, recycling and yard waste is picked up.

Residents may also take large items to one of two landfills available to Township residents and are listed below. We suggest that you contact the landfill before you go to confirm they will accept your item, as both places do not necessarily accept the same items. Also, you should also verify the current "dumping fee" you will be charged to use the landfill.

As an alternative to paying the Township for pickup of large items, the Township encourages residents to join with neighbors or possibly Neighborhood Associations to rent a roll off dumpster to reduce the cost of disposal. Also, if items are in good condition and can be reused, consider donating them to organizations such as Goodwill, Purple Heart, Salvation Army, Easter Seals and homeless shelters or place an ad for them on websites such as www.freecycle.org or http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/mi. Also, click here to view a copy of "Wayne County's Resource Recovery Guide" for suggestions on where you can recycle or donate many items.

Be assured that your elected officials will be continually exploring other ways to offer large item pickup service at a reduced cost to the residents at some time in the future. Our current waste hauler contract expires in 2012 and we also see this as an opportunity to eliminate the separate fee for large item pickup. If you have suggestions you would like to share with your elected officials regarding this matter, please write to them at 15145 Beech Daly, Redford, MI 48239 or contact them by emailing at trustee@redfordtwp.com.
