Advanced Life Support
Your Fire Department has been providing Advanced Life Support (ALS) Treatment and Transport for over a decade. Since the implementation of the ALS program, your Firefighter/Medics have been able to swiftly provide intervention procedures that can lead to a higher probability of survival for our residents. Examples of these treatment modalities include: administering medications to control pain, correcting cardiac anomalies, and providing fluid therapy to patients whose circulatory systems have been compromised.Advanced airway proceedures allow us the establish a patent airway when one is compromised from trauma and allergic reactions, for example. This is facilitated by Endo-Trachael Intubation. Further, we transmit 12 lead Electrocardiograms (ECG) from the field to the receiving Emergency Department (E/D). This provides the awaiting physician with real time data before the patient is received by the E/D. This year, we began to utilize Intra-osceous Drills (I/O D) which allow your Firefighter/Medics to quickly administer medications and fluids to patients when conventional Intervenous (I/V) sites are impractical. This tecnique will become part of Wayne County Protocol in the future, but your Fire Department prefers to be ahead of the curve when it comes to providing our residents with the most advanced procedures, irrespective of whether or not the protocol is in place.

The need
With our population growing older and living longer, there is a need to provide services to accommodate the changes that are taking place in our society .Senior Citizens seem to fear heart attacks, strokes and injuries more so than fires.

The objective
To provide the citizens of Redford Township with the best pre-hospital emergency care available. This is accomplished by providing immediate response of an Emergency Medical Rescue Unit, properly staffed with trained personnel in both fire fighting and Al.S. The provider must have the highest level of training available and equipped with the necessary life saving equipment to achieve this goal.

The history
Prior to 1996, Redford Township was considered a Basic Life Support (BLS) non- transporting service. Since then, through evolved stages, now we are at the highest level of pre-hospital patient care available.

The benefits to the citizens
"Chain of Survival"
Early access: The enhanced 911 system includes dispatchers able to give instructions while ALS is in route.
Early CPR: It is most effective when started immediately after the victims collapse.
Early defibrillation: This is the link most likely to improve survival.
Early ALS: Paramedics at the scene is another critical link in the cardiac arrest patient.
