The Seven Most Frequently Asked Questions Department of Solid Waste Management

Q. "When will the compost pickup begin, and how long will it last?"
A.
Compost collection begins on the first scheduled collection date after April 1 and continues until the last scheduled collection date prior to December 15 of each year.

Q. "Why were my 'building materials', 'cement' not picked up?"
A.
The materials involved in building, including large boards, drywall, cement and large auto parts are not picked up because of the damage that can occur to the sanitation vehicle's packer mechanism. However, residents who are interested in disposing of this material may use the transfer station of our sanitation contractor Great Lakes Waste Systems, located at:

Q. "I put (a large household item) at the curb on my scheduled day and Great Lakes did not pick it up, Why?"
A.
Large items for which the resident would normally be charged, are picked up by Redford Township employees, at no charge to the resident. The only requirement is these large items (sofa, recliner chair, table, console television etc.) must be scheduled for pick-up. The township will make every effort to schedule up to six large items for pick-up on your next regularly scheduled refuse day. However, on rare occasions due to high volumes of scheduling, the pick-up may be delayed by a week. Pick-ups can be scheduled by contacting the Department of Solid Waste Management at 387-2699. Please note: all freon producing appliances must be certified as having the freon removed by a license contractor prior to pick up by the township.

Q. "What can I do with my hazardous waste (paints, oils, pesticides, etc)?"
A.
Prior to 3 years ago, the last saturday in september was the hazardous waste drop-off day. Now it varies. Please check the website for details or call 313-387-2779. The township sponsors a hazardous waste drop-off day at the Department of Public Services Building, 12200 Beech Daly Road. Residents are invited to bring their hazardous waste to the DPS building between 9a.m. and 3p.m. and drop them off free of charge. If for some reason a resident can not wait until the scheduled drop off day, the township can provide them with the information needed to drop off their materials at the company's drop off center in Belleville, MI. To avoid a charge for this service, appointments with the contractor must be scheduled.

Q. "Does the township still have household pickups in the spring?"
A.
Beginning with the township's contract with BFI/Great Lakes, the township maintains household pick-ups all year long. The only requirements are that large items be limited to six items per scheduled pick-up, and that you receive a scheduled time by contacting the Department of Solid Waste Management at 387-2699.

Q. "The sanitation workers, (took or damaged) my cans, who do I talk to about that?"
A.
Your first call should go directly to the contractor (Great Lakes Waste Systems) at 1-800-234-3311. If you do not have a solution to your problem within a reasonable time (approximately 10 working days) contact the Redford Township Department of Solid Waste Management at 387-2699. We will assist you in following up on this matter.

Q. "When should I schedule a tree branch pick-up rather than set my limbs out for pick up by the sanitation contractor?"
A.
The first "rule of thumb" should be, can the limbs be broken into smaller pieces which can be tied and bundled no more than four feet in length and two feet in height? Do I need to set out more than two or more of these bundles per week? If the answer to the first question is yes, than you should try this procedure, bundle and tie the branches as long as they meet the requirements mentioned above. If you need to set out more than two bundles per week, you should contact the Department of Public Works for to schedule the chipping crew. Please note: There is a charge for the chipping service, $20 for a small pile and $35 for the equivalent of a full tree. Seniors Citizens receive a substantial discount for these services. For more information or to schedule a township chipper please contact the Department of Public Works at 387-2690.
