Recycling Bins
All homes in Redford were provided with blue recycle bins when the recycling program began. If you are new to Redford and don’t have a recycle bin or are in need of a replacement bin, you can purchase one for a small fee of $10 at the Department of Public Services Building, 12200 Beech Daly, Monday thru Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. You may purchase more than one bin if you would like.
Large Item Pick Up
(i.e. items not acceptable with household trash collection)
On April 27, 2010, the Township Board reinstituted a fee for resident requests to pickup large item(s) that are not acceptable for putting out with your household trash and this fee will be charged for any pickup scheduled to be done on May 17th and after. Prior to 1992 the Township had also charged a separate fee for this pick up service. From 1992 and until recently the revenues generated from the garbage millage that is assessed on all property tax bills was able to allow the Township to offer free pickups. However, because of declining revenues and dropping property values there are no longer funds to support this as a free service. Note that only those who actually use the pickup service by the Township will be paying the fee. We have researched what some other communities are charging and also checked what companies like “Got Junk” charge to come out and pickup items for disposal and found that their fees range from $60, $150 and more. Based on our research we have set the Township’s fee schedule is as follows:
- A minimum of $60 which allows up to two items
- $15 for each additional item
Pre-payments for large item pickup must be made at the Department of Public Services Building, 12200 Beech Daly, which is located directly across from the main Post Office, Monday thru Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and at that time you will be given a specific pickup date. If you are unable to come in during these times, you may mail your request or place it in our drop box on the side of the building. Click here to download a printable form to complete and send in with your payment by check or money order. Do not place cash in our drop box or send by mail. Checks should be made payable to “Redford Township Central Maintenance Department and mailed to 12200 Beech Daly, Redford MI 48239. A receipt will be mailed to you and will include the date on which your items will be picked up. Please note that you may not set any item at the road until 6:00 pm the night before your scheduled pick up or you will be in violation of Township ordinances and may receive a ticket from the Ordinance Department.
Acceptable large items are those that cannot be put out for pickup with regular household trash and would include furniture, carpet, etc. Items that will not be accepted for pickup are auto parts and tires, building materials, contractor’s debris, concrete, bricks, dirt, sod, oils or any other type of hazardous waste. If you have a specific question about whether an item you have is acceptable for pick up you may call (313) 387-2641. We can also provide you with a free way to dispose of appliances and other metal items.
Items that are not acceptable for by pickup by the Township may be taken by residents to the Veolia Landfill at 10690 Six Mile, Northville, MI (888) 443-1717. We suggest that you call the landfill first for the days and hours they are open, as well as their current dumping fees.
As an alternative to paying the Township for pickup of large items, the Township encourages residents to join with their neighbors or possibly Neighborhood Associations to rent a dumpster to reduce the costs of disposal. Also, if items are in good condition and can be reused, consider donating them to organizations such as Goodwill, Purple Heart, Salvation Army and homeless shelters or place an ad for them on websites such as www.freecycle.org and http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/mi. In addition, Wayne County has published a "Resource Recovery Guide" which has many suggestions on where you can recycle or donate items. Go to http://waynecounty.com/mygovt/doe/depts/lrmd/docs/resourceRecoveryGuide.pdf to view this Guide.
Be assured that your elected officials will be continually exploring other ways to change the way in which we offer large item pickup service to the residents. Our current waste hauler contract expires in 2012 and we will be exploring ways to possibly include large item pickup service in any new contract. If you have suggestions you would like to share with your elected officials regarding this matter, please write to them at 15145 Beech Daly, Redford, MI 48239 or contact them by emailing at trustee@redfordtwp.com.
Refuse Set Out Time
Residents
are reminded not to set trash/ recycling/ compost
at the curbside location for pickup until after 6 p.m. the night prior
to your scheduled pickup day. Empty trash receptacles should be removed
from the curb by the following day. Failure to comply with this schedule
is a Township ordinance violation and may result in a ticket.
Solid waste, recycling
and yard waste collection are provided to residents by Allied/Republic
Waste Services. The department of solid waste management still provides
the pick-up of large bulky items for a fee, maintains municipal buildings, and special clean-up
projects. The department also schedules a once per year household hazardous
waste drop of day at the Department of Public Services Building.
Branch Chipping
Redford Township has discontinued its branch chipping service effective May 1, 2010.
As an alternative, we suggest that residents who have a large amount of branches that need chipping contact a local tree service company who can provide them with this service. Also, the local Redford Chamber of Commerce (313) 535-0960 or the Redford Township Business Association (313) 618-0487 may have member tree service companies that they can recommend to you.
Another alternative if you only have a small amount of branches, twigs or shrubs and they are less than 1.5” in diameter is to cut them into lengths of 4 feet or less and tie them into bundles or place them into yard waste receptacles. The bundles or receptacles cannot weigh more than 45 pounds and should be set next to your other compost receptacles. Landscape and tree service contractors are responsible for the removal of all tree materials remaining as a result of their work.
Yard Waste Collection
State law requires that yard waste be kept separate from regular household trash. Grass clippings, shrubbery trimmings, leaves, weed vegetation and small twigs should be placed in brown yard waste bags that can be purchased at local a hardware or home store. Under no circumstance is yard waste in plastic bags acceptable and it will be left at the curb. As an alternative to yard waste bags you may use refuse cans that do not exceed a 36 gallon capacity, have handles on the outside of the can and are clearly marked "yard waste" or "compost". Yard waste cans when filled may not be more than 45 pounds. Cans or bags when placed out for pickup should be at least 5 feet away from other household trash and recyclables containers.
Twigs and shrubs less than 1.5” in diameter, cut in lengths of 4 feet or less and weighing no more than 45 pounds, may be placed into yard waste receptacles or tied into bundles and set next to your other compost receptacles. Landscape and tree service contractors are responsible for the removal of all tree materials remaining as a result of their work.
