The Charter Township of Redford in cooperation with BFI/Great Lakes Waste Systems is proud to provide your refuse and compost collection program. Please read this brochure carefully, and keep it handy as a resource that will answer many of your questions about the program.

Set out refuse cans or bags, recyclables and compost after 6:00pm the evening before collection, or before 6:30am on collection day.

Refuse must be in a watertight can (with lid & handles) or tied trash bag. Cans shall not exceed 36 gallon capacity nor weigh more than 45 pounds when filled. Recyclables should continue to be prepared according to the instructions provided on the last two pages of this brochure.

Refuse containers, recyclables and compost must be set adjacent to the street next to the driveway, and should be removed from the curb by evening of collection day.

Collection will not be made on the following legal holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. When a holiday occurs on a weekday, collection for the remaining week will be delayed one day; collection for Friday will be made on Saturday.

Items not collected include waste oil, paint, chemicals, auto parts, building materials contractor's debris, concrete, bricks or dirt.

Appliances and white goods: if you purchase a new appliance, the company selling the appliance should be asked to take your old one. For safety, remove the doors from refrigerators, freezers and large appliances.

Large appliances and bulky items will be picked up through Redford Township by appointment only. Please contact (313) 387-2699 for an appointment. There is NO CHARGE for the pickup service. The township does not pick up auto parts, building materials or concrete. Federal law prohibits pickup of electrical appliances containing freon unless the freon has been recovered and the proper certification sticker placed on the appliance. For a list of license heating and cooling specialists, telephone the Department of Solid Waste Management at 387-2699.

Grass clippings and leaves must be placedin brown paper composting bags or in a trash container with handles that is clearly marked "COMPOST". Set compost bags or containers at least 5 feet away from other garbage containers and recyclables. Yard waste will only be picked up between April 1st and December 15th of each year.

Branches, shrubs, limbs, and tree trunks less than 1 ½" in diameter:

  • Cut in lengths of 5 feet or less
  • Individual weight shall not exceed 45 pounds

Either place these branches, shrubs, limbs, tree trunks or stumps in your compost receptacles. Landscape and tree service contractors are responsible for the removal of all tree materials remaining as a result of their work. Redford Township provides a tree chipping service for a small cost. Please contact 387-2690 for details.
