and services for the day-to-day operation of the Department.

available for the Department such as computerized booking systems,
network communications with area departments, records management
systems, and radio equipment.
The Administrative Inspector supervises the following divisions
that are encompassed in the Administration Bureau.
PROPERTY
/ EVIDENCE
The Property Officer is responsible for the management of all property/evidence
that comes in to the Police Department and responsible for the custody
and control of all this property/evidence until time of disposition.
He coordinates one or two auctions each year. He records and categorizes
in-car videotapes, and is responsible for purchasing office supplies
and maintaining stock on hand. He makes several trips during the
year to Michigan State Police in Lansing for the destruction of
weapons and ammunition.
COMPUTER
SYSTEMS
The Department utilizes computer aided dispatch software, which
interfaces with a records management program. The LAN Administrator,
who is assigned to the Police Department from the Computer Systems
Department at Township Hall, maintains these programs. He is also
responsible for the maintenance of all Police Department computers,
which include over 50 desktop computers and 20 in-car laptops, which
are tied into the AS/400 (host system). He also maintains the fuel
management system for the Department and the entire telephone and
voice mail system for the Township.
FLEET
MAINTENANCE
The Department employs a vehicle/radio technician to maintain the
Department vehicles and related radio/emergency equipment. This
enables Redford to save thousands of dollars a year by not having
to send out vehicles and radios for repair at local repair shops.
The Technician also coordinates the mechanical repairs needed for
the cars with area repair shops while maintaining the assorted electrical
equipment in the vehicles.
FIREARMS
TRAINING UNIT
The Department has 10 State Certified in Firearms Training Officers.
Additionally, five officers were trained in the Sig Arms Weapons
Systems to perform maintenance and repair of the Department-owned
handguns. Training conducted by the Firearms Training Unit included
basic pistol qualification, tactical shotgun and firearms training
simulations.
BUILDING
MAINTENANCE
The Custodian is responsible for preventive maintenance on the heating
and cooling system. He also coordinates the safety inspections of
the boilers, fire sprinklers, fire alarm systems, and elevator in
the building. The Custodian provides services for the restricted
areas of the building and coordinates the daily cleaning of the
remainder of the building with the contracted cleaning company.
CRIME
PREVENTION/D.A.R.E. BUREAU
The Crime Prevention Bureau is responsible for the Neighborhood
Watch Program, the Redford Eyes and Ears Patrol, Gang Resistance
Education and Training, Explorer Program and School Resource Officer
Program. Anyone interested in any of the following programs should
contact the Crime Prevention office at 313-387-2547.
NEIGHBORHOOD
WATCH PROGRAM
The Redford Neighborhood Watch program was established in the early
1970's, under rhe philosophy of Community Policing, which seeks
to establish a strong working relationship between the patrol officers
and the citizens they serve. Community participation in this anti-crime
program is essential. The Neighborhood Watch program has the measurable
effect of substantially reducing the fear of crime, encouraging
crime reporting and stimulating member involvement in crime prevention.
Currently, Redford Township has over 100 blocks involved in the
program. Meetings are held throughout the year. The meetings allow
the citizens to discuss matters within their community.
REDFORD
EYES AND EARS (R.E.E.P.)
The Redford R.E.E.P. is a volunteer civilian CB based patrol. The
R.E.E.P. members patrol the streets of Redford helping keep the
citizens of Redford safe. R.E.E.P. members are provided with CB
radios by the Police department and report suspicious incidents
to a base patrol. The base patrol reports these incidents to the
Police dispatch. Currently there are fourteen R.E.E.P. members volunteering
their time. Anyone interested in joining must be 18 years or older
and pass a background check.
GANG
RESISTANCE EDUCTAION AND TRAINING (G.R.E.A.T.)
The GREAT program is taught to 7th grade students in the Redford
Union School District. This program started nationally in 1991 and
was brought to Redford through a cooperative effort between the
Redford Union School District and the Redford Police in 1997. The
GREAT program strives to teach young people problem and conflict
resolution skills. The GREAT program also teaches students about
goal setting and responsibility. This class is taught to the entire
seventh grade. An additional summer program is also taught to select
students teaching them team building and peer mediation.
EXPLORER
POST 342
Exploring is the young adult division of the Boy Scouts of America,
for young men and women of high school age. Interest in law enforcement
is increasing among young adults, to encourage this interest, the
law enforcement Exploring Program was developed. The intent of the
Law Enforcement Exploring is to educate and involve youth in police
operations, to interest them in law enforcement functions, weather
they enter police work or not. Explorers conduct a variety of program
projects featuring safety, training and service. Programs are hands-on
activities, rather than lectures. The Redford Police Explorers volunteer
their time in community service throughout the year. Explorers attend
bi-weekly meetings where they engage in training exercises and
social interaction.
