
Lighting Commission
History
Supervisor Richard Manning in 1955 created a special assessment district within the boundaries of Redford Township where the expense of street lighting is taxed upon each and every parcel of land in the Township. If you own a parcel of land in Redford you share the equal cost of lighting with everyone.
A notice was put in the Detroit Free Press on October 3, 1955 that a Notice of Meeting to Determine an Assessment District For Lighting of Highways. It read: THEREFORE, the Township Board of Redford Township, Wayne County, Michigan, hereby gives notice to all free-holders in the areas given above, that said Township Board will meet at the Township Hall, 15145 Beech Road, from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, October 8, 1955, for the purpose of hearing objections from any of the said freeholders to the creation of said assessment district.
The street lighting special assessment district was created by a Board resolution on October 11, 1955 after a petition for same had been filed. The district is township-wide and was created pursuant to MCLA 41.253 (Public Act 264 of 1917), which provides for the establishment of a special assessment district in order to defray the expenses of street lighting.
Redford Township has 3338 lights.
Lighting Commission
Lighting Commission meets when issues that arise regarding street lights. The last major project this Commission worked on was completed in 2009 with additional lighting on Plymouth Road.
