About the Clerk's Office
Since 2000 when Garth Christie came into office, the monies the Township receives in revenue have been cut dramatically. The proactive approach he has taken has been to cut our costs, become more efficient and incorporate new ways to complete the tasks at hand with a minimum affect to our residents.
The Township website is an efficient means for residents to conduct their business with the Township 24/7. The Township ordinances went on line in (Read more...)

Citizenship - April 2012
by Garth Christie, MMC
The importance citizens place on their own identities was most eloquently expressed by William Shakespeare in his play Othelo, "Who steals my purse steals trash; … But he that filches from me my good name robs me of that which not enriches him and makes me poor indeed." The Bard of Avon, however, was only half right. In the intervening centuries, criminals have learned how to enrich themselves by filching the good name of honest citizens.
Because of the hodgepodge of laws that can be clumped together as identity theft crimes; e.g. mail fraud, credit card theft, bank fraud, etc., it is difficult to reach exact numbers, but it is clear, that during the information age, this is America's fastest growing crime. Millions of citizens have been victimized at a cost of billions of dollars. Typically, it costs a citizen about $800 and 175 hours to repair a mess caused by an instance of identity theft.
True, the internet and the explosion of information technology have given identity thieves more opportunities, but this is not a new crime and citizens should be aware of some low tech, time tested techniques. For example, "shoulder surfing" is used when a criminal posts nearby in order to overhear or observe information punched into a phone. "Dumpster diving" is another old favorite since a communal trash bin is a treasure trove of bank and credit card statements and pre-approved loan applications. Above all, citizens should beware of the old fashioned pickpocket.
This column is not intended as a comprehensive report on identity theft. There is a plethora of information readily available on this topic. One common prevention recommendation is that citizens should regularly destroy sensitive personal documents. Document Destruction Day began in 2006 because citizens demanded it. It was discontinued after four years because of budget cut backs. This popular service returns Saturday, May 5th thanks to the sponsorship of Community Choice Credit Union. A Shred-it truck will be behind Town Hall from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. (or until the truck is full).
Get rid of those old documents your tax preparer told you to. Eliminate clutter. Prevent your identity theft and be an environmentalist. Citizens who take advantage of this free service will score a civic hat trick!
